What does 1 Samuel 16 7 teach us? ›

Man does not see what the LORD sees, for man sees what is visible, but the LORD sees the heart" (1 Sam. 16:7). Whereas man places a high price on the externals God examines deep within that man for something more. Man judges one on the basis of one's appearance, but God critiques the heart.

In 1 Samuel 16, God anointed David to be Israel's next king. From the process involving the selection of David and his service to Saul, God reveals seven lessons for being a leader for Him. These include: (1) trust; (2) faith; (3) integrity; (4) being Spirit-led; (5) submission; (6) service; and (7) worship.

1 Samuel 16:7 Desires God to Purify Our Hearts

You see what is true about my heart, our hearts. God, we want our hearts to be pleasing to you. Purify our hearts, we pray. Humble our hearts, soften our hearts, make our hearts like yours, we pray.

1 Samuel 16:7 agrees with the above passage in that it says our omniscient God knows our hearts – every one of our hearts. He knows each person's heart condition and the motives behind everything we think, say, and do. Man cannot see another's heart; only God can see a man's heart — the seat of who he intrinsically is.

Listen to God's Word, "for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). What is really wonderful is when a person is healthy and right on the inside. Such inner health and rightness will show forth on the outside as well.

Samuel is commanded to go and anoint the next king, who will be the Messiah for his people and the type of the Messiah who became the King of kings and the Lord of lords. But, like so much of the subsequent story of God's campaign, this one is filled with surprises. God is always doing things in ways we do not expect.

The anointing of David evokes not only the idea of God's elected king, but also that of shepherd; the sacrifice presages Christ as the sacrificial lamb, anticipating the final painting of the entire series, the Last Supper.

Saul was allowed to rule for as long as he lived, but God planned to have another man ready to become king after Saul died. God told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint one of Jesse's sons as the next king. The official way that a person was shown to be chosen by God was to be anointed.

From this can deduce that “to anoint” is not just to “smear or rub oil” over a person or thing. It means to separate and make sacred. The moment we gave our lives to Christ, God separated us for Himself. He anointed us by His Spirit so that we became different from other humans, consecrated to Himself.

For this, God reveals that He speaks to those who diligently seek Him. Second, even before he knew the Lord, Samuel showed his responsiveness by leaping forward when called. From this, God reveals that He wants you to be responsive to His Word, even when you do not understand.

David's prayer of repentance is in response to premeditated sin that he planned out intentionally and that he tried to bury to avoid the negative consequences. The spontaneous, day-to-day sins, over a decade of confessing them and submitting them to God, decrease as we gradually find victory over them.

Joyful sacrifice, relentless submission, godly sorrow, and soul-ravishing satisfaction—these are the marks of a heart captivated by the glory and beauty of God.

1 Samuel 16:7 Reminds Us that Our Heart Matters

I want your hearts attuned to me, desiring me, loving me. This is the first and greatest commandment.” Jesus says, “Love. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength.

God created us with a physical heart that allows us to live temporally; he gave us a spiritual heart that means we will live eternally. Guarding your heart begins with a commitment to strive for a healthy heart.

He is also a positive example… how to repent and turn back to the Lord after we have sinned. He is an example in that he points us to God. If God is willing to show mercy toward David at the lowest point in his life, there is hope for us. If David found God's grace in the aftermath of his sin, we can too.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Rom. 10:9-10). Note that Paul said “if” one confesses with the mouth and believes in their heart they shall be saved. The opposite of that is that if they do not do those two things, they will not be saved.

The phrase "God bless the child that's got his own" implies that those who have their own resources and are self-sufficient are deserving of God's blessings. In other words, individuals who are able to take care of themselves and provide for their own needs are more likely to succeed and be blessed in life.

This means that when Jesus tells you to be merciful as your Father is merciful, he is telling you not only to love your neighbor, but to love your enemies and pray for those who hate you. Forgive in your heart those who have sinned against you and have not said sorry.
