10 Secrets to The Very Best Waffles

The secret to making the best waffles isn’t that secret at all! Just follow these tips and you’ll have THE BEST Waffles each and every time!

How to make waffles in a waffle maker

The best waffle makers are the ones that allow you to flip them when you are cooking your waffle. Just a quick search on Amazon and you can find the best one for your budget. I have this waffle maker and love it!

Preheat the waffle maker

Make sure to preheat the waffle maker completely before adding the batter. Also, make sure to allow the waffle maker to reheat for 1-2 minutes between cooking waffles.

Make sure to lightly spray your waffle maker with non-stick spray each time you make a waffle, as well.

Whisk the eggs

Whisk those eggs up nice and fluffy. You might not think it makes a difference, but it does! Adding air to the eggs gives your waffles a nice, light and fluffy texture.

Use Real Butter

I promise you that the taste and texture you get from using actual butter are AMAZING. This is not the time to substitute and use “healthier” options. TRUST ME. Use my homemade waffle recipe for the best results. (linked above)

Mix carefully

When mixing your batter, do so gently. The batter will have lumps in it. That’s normal! Just mix until the ingredients are well combined and stop.

Let the batter rest

Allow your batter to rest for about 5 minutes before making your first waffle. This allows all the ingredients to mix together and do their thing.

It’s definitely the difference between light and fluffy waffles and dense waffles with a runny batter.

Cook your waffle carefully

Cook your waffle until it stops steaming. DO NOT PEEK. You will tear your waffle apart and it won’t cook correctly. Just put the batter in, (usually 1/4 cup – check your waffle maker instructions) close the lid, and wait.

Your waffle maker should have a light on it and let you know when it’s done. Most waffle makers also have a setting you can adjust for how brown you’d like your waffles. I like mine light brown and crispy. The butter you add to the batter makes this perfect, too! (see step #3!)

Eat Right Away

If you want the crispiest waffles, eat them right away. If you won’t be, a good tip is to preheat your oven to 200 degrees and add the waffles right on the wrack to keep warm. Do not add them to a baking sheet so that the bottom doesn’t get soft.

Maple Syrup

Ok, this isn’t really a “making a waffle” tip, but it’s essential. Top your waffles with REAL maple syrup. There’s just something about the maple syrup that brings out the best flavor and texture. It’s to die for!

OH – and butter. REAL butter right on top. YES, you will have butter IN the waffles, but also ON TOP. Again, TRUST ME.

Make Extras

If you still have batter left over, go ahead and make the extra waffles. Allow to cool and pop in the freezer in a single layer on a cookie sheet to freeze. Once frozen, add to a freezer bag to store. When you want a waffle during the week, just remove it from the freezer and add to a toaster. I like to break my waffle in half and add half to each slot. That’s it! You’ll have a yummy waffle in no time!

Homemade Waffles FAQs

Secrets to Making The Very Best Crispy Waffles (3)

Now that I’ve covered some tips for making THE BEST Waffles every time. Here are some common questions I get asked about waffles. Hopefully, they help you out with any questions you may have!

How DoYou Make Waffles Out Of A Pancake Mix?

If you’re using a box mix check the back of the box. Waffles tend to have a thicker batter, but you can use a pancake mix for waffles. Whisk your water, eggs, and oil in a bowl and add in your pancake mix. Whip up until a nice and smooth batter.

Add around 6 oz of batter to a greased preheated waffle iron. You want to have it set around 375-380 degrees, and cook for around 3-4 minutes or untila golden brown color.

How To Make Waffles From Scratch

Making waffles from scratch is just as easy as using a box mix. Try my recipe for best results! Flour, eggs, milk, vanilla, and a few other ingredients are all that is required for making a homemade waffle from scratch.

Some assume making homemade waffles is hard, but really it requires basic simple ingredients you can whip up in about the same time as using a box mix.

Can You Leave Waffle Batter In The Fridge Overnight?

Yes! But I don’t advise it. One thing to note is that the baking powder can lose some of the potency as it sits overnight, so before you cook, just add in a little more, whisk until blended and then cook away.

Or you can test and if your first waffle doesn’t cook up right, add in more baking powder at that time. Again, not the best idea, but you may be able to make it work. Store the batter in an airtight container if you do refrigerate the batter.

Can You Freeze Waffle Batter?

Yes, and No. Some people love freezing their waffle batter (up to 3 months) and find success. While personally, I find the texture of the waffles change and it isn’t as great.

You will need to add in more baking powder just like if you were to refrigerate the batter, so it rises properly. If you want to do a test, go for it. Just know it might not be an amazing turnout.

Can Waffles Be Reheated?

We love making extra waffles, freezing them and then reheating them at a later time. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Lay out a layer of waffles on a baking sheet.

Then bake for around 5 minutes or so, check, flip if needed, and cook until they are cooked through and no longer cold. Serve immediately after. You can also just pop them in the toaster if you need just one at a time!

How to Freeze Waffles Properly

Lay your waffles out on a baking sheet and pop in the freezer to flash freeze. Once they are frozen, wrap wax paper around each waffle, and then package them up how you want, wrapping in aluminum foil or a sealable freezer bag. Then pull out what you want, without them sticking together when you go to reheat them.

Can You Microwave Waffles?

You can microwave waffles to reheat them, but it will be a softer texture. You won’t get that classic crispy edge as to a waffle maker or toasting in the toaster. Wrap a wet paper towel around your waffles, and heat for around 30-40 second intervals, until warmed through.

What are the best waffle toppings?

Syrup and honey are going to be two of the most popular toppings to add but you can also add fresh fruit like blueberries and strawberries as well!

Some people also like to add cinnamon and sugar to their waffles, or even a small amount of peanut butter for a boost of protein!

If you’re not a fan of syrups, a little bit of powdered sugar on the top always works!

How To Make A Waffle Without A Waffle Iron

Don’t hold out for a restaurant waffle or frozen, learn how to make a waffle without a waffle iron! Use a grill pan instead, to get that perfect waffle taste! It might not have all the grooves, but I guarantee it taste just as good.

Heat your grill pan to medium heat, and prepare your waffle batter. Use a brush and oil your pan well, and then ladle out your batter in the center of the pan. Lower your heat a bit to a lower setting and cook for around 3-4 minutes.

Look to see that your waffle feels crispy and cooked in the center. Flip over and cook the other side for around 3-4 minutes.

There you go! The best tips for the most Amazing Waffles each and every time! If you have questions, leave them in the comments below!
