Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Hyannis Harbor Hawks top Y-D Red Sox in marquee showdown (2024)

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (24-14-2) topped the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (24-12-4) 7-1 at Red Wilson Field on Sunday in what could be a showdown for the Cape Cod Baseball League championship. The Red Sox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the Harbor Hawks scored the final seven runs.

Tennessee duo Cannon Peebles (one hit, two runs, one RBI) and Dalton Bargo (two hits, two runs, one RBI) both hit solo homers in the third inning. J.P. Acosta (Fresno CC) had two hits, scored a run and tallied an RBI. Paul Schmitz (Houston) pitched two innings, both of which were scoreless and hitless.

Michael Ball (Nevada) hit a solo home run for the Red Sox’s only run of the game. Rice’s Caleb Williams pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up five hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five in the loss.

Bourne Braves 11, Cotuit Kettleers 5

The Braves (21-14-2) stretched their winning streak out to three after they beat the Kettleers (22-17-1) to secure the third seed in the playoffs. Florida Atlantic’s John Schroeder (two hits, two runs, six RBIs) hit a grand slam and Clemson’s Tristen Bissetta (one hit, two runs, one RBI) hit a solo homer. Davis Gillespie (Southern Mississippi) tallied two hits and scored twice. Packy Bradley-Cooney (Arizona) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up just a hit.

Arizona State’s Brandon Compton (two hits) hit a home run for the Kettleers. Temo Becerra (Stanford) had two hits and tallied an RBI. Aidan Hunter (College of Charleston) gave up five hits, six runs, walked three and struck out two in two innings.

Orleans Firebirds 7, Chatham Anglers 1

The Firebirds (15-25) beat the Anglers (20-20) to secure the final playoff spot in the East Division. They used a five-run fifth inning sparked by a wild pitch and a two-run homer by Northwestern’s Bennett Markinson (one hit, two RBIs, one run). Lorenzo Meola (Stetson) had two hits and scored twice, while Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) recorded two hits, an RBI and a run. Cody Bowker (Vanderbilt) pitched five scoreless innings, gave up just a hit, walked two and struck out seven.

Chance Cox gave up two hits, allowed two runs (one earned), walked one and struck out two in three innings in a loss that dropped him to a 1-1 record.

Harwich Mariners 15, Brewster Whitecaps 7

The Mariners (16-24) eliminated the Whitecaps (13-25-2) from playoff contention with their lopsided win. Brewster led 6-3 when Harwich scored seven runs in the fourth inning before it posted four in the fifth. The Whitecaps never recovered. Oregon State’s Wilson Weber (five RBIs, two hits, two runs) hit a grand slam. Tommy Barth (Kansas) had three hits, two RBIs and a run. Macon Winslow (Duke) had two hits and scored three times. Aden Hill (Maryland) and Cam Maldonado (Northeastern) both had two RBIs and a hit. North Carolina State’s Chance Mako improved to 2-1 after he pitched two innings, gave up one hit, two runs, three walks and struck out two.

Colby Shelton (Florida) hit a grand slam on his only hit of the game, while Ryder Helfrick (Arkansas) and Kaeden Kent (Texas A&M) both had RBIs. Louisville’s Parker Detmers pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up three hits, nine runs (all earned), walked seven and struck out one in the loss.

Wareham Gatemen 9, Falmouth Commodores 5

The Gatemen (22-17-1) scored six-straight runs to overhaul the Commodores (16-23-1). Eight Gatemen recorded an RBI, led by Nate Earley (Florida SouthWestern State JC) and Sam White (West Virginia) who both had two hits. San Diego State’s Colby Turner had two hits and scored twice. Jaxon Lucas (North Carolina State) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, gave up a hit, walked three and struck out four to pick up his first win. Clemson’s Hudson Lee struck out two on his way to the save.

Oklahoma State duo Donovan LaSalle (two hits, three RBIs, one run) had a two-run home run and Trent Caraway (three hits, two RBIs, two runs) hit a solo homer. Gavin Wilhelm (Washburn) allowed two hits, two runs (both earned), walked two and struck out four in the loss.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 11, Wareham Gatemen 4

The Harbor Hawks (23-14-2) beat the Gatemen (21-17-1) to clinch their first West Division title since 2015. Michael Dattalo (Dallas Baptist) led the way with two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while Western Kentucky’s Blake Cavill (three hits, two runs, one RBI) hit a solo home run. Cannon Peebles (Tennessee) had two hits, two RBIs and drew a walk. Kane Kepley (North Carolina) scored twice, drew two walks and had a hit. The Harbor Hawks had five players record at least two hits. Aaron Mishoulam (Michigan State) pitched 4 1/3 innings, gave up four hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out three. UC Santa Barbara’s Reed Moring (3-1) secured the win after he pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, gave up one hit and struck out two.

Florida SouthWestern State JC’s Nate Early (two hits, one RBI, one run) crushed a solo homer and Fresno State’s Triston Gray had two hits and scored a run. Eli Putnam (Davidson) had two hits, two RBIs and scored once. Darin Horn (Coastal Carolina) gave up five hits, five runs (all earned), walked one and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings and dropped to an 0-2 record.

Brewster Whitecaps 13, Y-D Red Sox 5

The Whitecaps (13-24-2) kept their postseason hopes alive until the last day after they defeated the Red Sox (24-11-4). Florida’s Brody Donay (three hits, three RBIs, two runs) had a two-run home run. California Baptist’s Nick Dumesnil recorded two hits and scored three times. Oregon State’s Dallas Macias (one hit) tallied three RBIs and scored twice. Vanderbilt’s J.D. Rogers scored three times. Jacob Marlowe (Florida State) pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, three runs (all earned), walked one and struck out three. Darien Smith (Southeastern) moved to a 1-2 record with the win after he tossed 2 1/3 innings of two-hit and one-run innings with three strike outs.

Easton Carmichael (Oklahoma) had three hits, an RBI and scored a run. Will Tippett (South Carolina) hit a two-run homer. Brooks Ey (Bryant) gave up three hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out three in two innings pitched in the loss.

Chatham Anglers 5, Harwich Mariners 3

The Anglers (20-19), who had already clinched a playoff spot, beat the Mariners (15-24) by scoring three unanswered runs to overturn a two-run deficit. Dallas Baptist’s Chayton Krauss (one hit) and Tennessee’s Robin Villenueve (three hits) both hit solo home runs. Jayden Davis (Vanderbilt) had two hits and scored twice. Tanner Franklin (Kennesaw State) picked up his second win after he pitched one scoreless and hitless inning with three strike outs, while JD McReynolds (Central Missouri) earned the save.

Maryland’s Aden Hill hit a two-run homer and Northeastern’s Cam Maldonado had a hit (double) and two RBIs. Jake Ogden (UNC Greensboro) had two hits and scored a run. Andrew Evans (Kansas State) pitched four innings, gave up nine hits, three runs (all earned), one walk and struck out six.

Bourne Braves 7, Orleans Firebirds 4

The Braves (20-16-3) swept the double-header against the Firebirds (14-25) to overhaul the Gatemen for the third seed in the West Division with a game remaining in the regular season. Arizona State’s Isaiah Jackson (three hits) and Southern Mississippi’s Davis Gillespie (one hit, one run) bot had two RBIs each. Braden Holcomb (Vanderbilt) had three hits, one RBI and scored a run. Cameron Padgett (North Carolina) pitched three innings, gave up five hits, three runs (all earned), walked one and struck out three. Preston Prince (Rutgers) moved to a 1-1 record after he pitched two scoreless innings and gave up two hits.

Four Firebirds drove in a run in the loss. Matthew Dalquist dropped to an 0-3 record, pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowed nine hits, seven runs (all earned), two walks and struck out three.

Bourne Braves 4, Orleans Firebirds 0

The Braves (20-15-3) blanked the Firebirds (14-24) with a pair of runs in the fourth and seventh innings. North Greenville’s David Lewis had two hits, two RIBs and scored a run. Clemson’s Tristan Bissetta and Blake Barthol (Coastal Carolina) both had an RBI. Jonathan Stevens (Alabama) pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up just three hits, walked two and struck out three. Griffin Hugus (Cincinnati) picked up his second win after he pitched 3 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings.

Michael Foltz Jr. (George Washington) pitched six innings, gave up two hits, two runs (both earned), walked five and struck out seven but dropped to an 0-3 record.

Cotuit Kettleers 7, Falmouth Commodores 3

The Kettleers (22-16-1) used a four-run seventh innings to beat the Commodores (16-22-1). Matt Klein (Louisville) record three hits, three RBIs and scored twice. Jarren Advincula (California) had four hits and scored twice. Virginia’s Luke Hanson (one hit) and Stanford’s Temo Becerra (two hits) both had two RBIs. Beau Sampson (Salt Lake CC), who picked up his first win, pitched two scoreless innings, gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out three.

Louisville’s Zion Rose had three hits, including a double, and scored twice for the Commodores. Patrick Roche (Boston College) had two hits and an RBI. Matthew Dallas (Wake Forest) pitched six innings, gave up eight hits, three runs (all earned), walked two and struck out six and dropped to a 1-2 record.

Falmouth Commodores 7, Cotuit Kettleers 5

The Commodores (16-21-1) scored two runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to upend the Kettleers (21-16-1) in a resumed game from July 25. Karson Bowen (Texas Christian) recorded three hits, and two RBIs and Zion Rose (Louisville) had a hit and two RBIs to lead the Commodores. Jaden Noot (Louisiana State) improved to a 3-0 record with the win, where he pitched four innings, allowed four hits, two runs (earned) and struck out three. Edward Hart (Duke) made his second save after he pitched three innings, gave up six hits, one run, walked two and struck out three.

Easton Winfield (Texas) tallied four RBIs and two hits, including a double. (Luke Hanson (Virginia) had two hits and scored twice. Texas State’s Taylor Seay pitched two innings, gave up four hits, three hits (all earned), walked one and struck out one and dropped to a 1-1 record.
